Sherwin Dodge Printers Goes High Tech!!

For years the standard expression in business has been "Better. Faster. Cheaper. Pick Two." Now, aided by new technology, Sherwin Dodge Printers in Littleton is proving customers no longer have to choose. They can, if fact, have it all.

"We’ve recently installed a new proofing and platemaking system which utilizes computer-to-plate technology. This means we can bypass the film making stage traditionally required to make a printing plate," explains owner Doug Garfield.

"Bypassing the film stage," adds Garfield, "means an even higher quality image, less room for human error, shorter turnaround times, and a less expensive printing process for our customer."

The computer-to-plate, or CTP as it’s more commonly referred to, technology has been available for several years. Eliminating the need for film quickly won acclaim for the process. However, the higher costs of special plates and chemicals as well as the disposal cost of those chemicals offset most of the new technology’s savings.

Using the UV-Setter Series 5 manufactured by Punch Graphix International, Sherwin Dodge is able to realize $15,000 in annual savings in film without creating new recurring expenses. The system allows them to use the plates they’ve always used.

In addition Sherwin Dodge has a new printer which will improve the proofing process. "With the new printer, we’ll be able to print a customer’s piece, let’s say it’s a four-color brochure, in color, and folded. So the proof will look like the finished product. If you’re the one proofing, that’s a real bonus," said Garfield.
